Bikinis on the brain

Swimwear designer Matthew Zink shares the iconic fashion images that inspire his line.

American designer Matthew Zink has always been infatuated with the decadence of the 1970s, which has had significant influence on his line of sophisticated, yet provacative men's and women's swimwear, Charlie by Matthew Zink. He certainly credits his apprenticeships with industry heavyweights like Tom Ford, Stefano Pilati and Carolina Herrera, and his stint as design director for Victoria’s Secret swimwear and shoes as inspiration, but it's the iconic fashion moments of the golden decade, the glitz and glamour of the days of Studio 54 and the emergence of modern design that have truly shaped his design aesthetic. Zink explains:

versace

This campaign featuring Stephanie Seymour was shot by Richard Avedon in the early 1980s, and it's one of my absolute favorite fashion images. For me, it is perfect in its simplicity.

missoni

Missoni's Spring 2004 Campaign of Kate Moss shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott was love at first sight. It was my second year in NYC, and I remember I actually found it in a catalog at Bergdorf Goodman, and I have it to this day! The magic that happens between these great talents of our industry is nothing short of magical.

norman parkinson

Norman Parkinson took this photo of Jerry Hall for the May 1975 issue of American Vogue. I love the intimate glimpse that this image seems to reveal, as though we were able to watch the artist and his muse.

paulina porizkova

Paulina Porizkova‘s years in Sports Illustrated were truly the golden era of swimwear. Her countless iconic shots from this time are still unrivaled. They were part of the imagery that truly made me fall in love with the bikini.

maxwell caulfield

Maxwell Caulfield was featured on the cover of After Dark Magazine's 1982 September Issue. In my opinion, the pictures from this issue are some of the most handsome images of a man ever taken. They are ALWAYS on my mood boards.

olivia newton-john

Olivia Newton-John's Physical had such an impact on me. The combination of Olivia's impossible smile surrounded by those incredible athletes with a backdrop of steam and black tile are incredible! AND THE SONG!

soloflex catalog

Scott Madsen was the original model for Soloflex. The classic and revolutionary commercial featured this beautiful machine in an empty room as Scott hypnotically performed a perfectly choreographed routine. I was convinced...I needed a Soloflex.

biba

Barbara Hulanicki's Biba is one of the single greatest influences for me as a designer. This image of Biba's "Rainbow Room" shows her exceptional ability to transform her larger than life vision. Barbara was able to create a world that was so perfectly designed in its marriage of all the great loves of her life and the time she lived in.
